Foote Fellows Honors Program

Foote Fellows, welcome to the Office of Academic Enhancement! Erika Liberus, Director of Prestigious Awards and Fellowships, and Molly Lockwood Ho, Associate Director, support the co-curricular management of the Foote Fellows Honors Program. Together, they manage the footefellows@miami.edu email and the Foote Fellow Mentorship Program, and host the Foote Fellow Welcome Reception each fall for incoming Foote Fellows.

The Foote Fellows Honors Program recognizes the most educationally accomplished incoming students at the University of Miami. Foote Fellows have distinguished themselves both in and out of the classroom, are self-motivated, and think independently. Admission to the Foote Fellows Honors Program is by invitation upon admission to the University. Current students looking to become Foote Fellows should contact their individual schools/colleges at the University to learn more about the process to gain admittance to the program.

At each of the nine undergraduate schools at the University of Miami, Navigators helps Foote Fellows chart their academic path and attain access to distinctive learning opportunities and educational guidance. Within the curricular framework of their school or college, Foote Fellows enjoy the freedom to explore a multitude of educational resources. Please discuss with your Cane Navigator how you can take full advantage of being a Foote Fellow at the University as each major has different requisites for completing a degree.

Additionally, Foote Fellows have access to opportunities outside their individual school/college with the Office of Academic Enhancement. Special events and programming are held throughout the academic year to welcome students, develop academically and professionally, and to celebrate accomplishments. Another exclusive offering for Foote Fellows is the “Books That Matter,” course, a rigorous, multidisciplinary seminar in reading and analyzing significant works of nonfiction with distinguished Professors William Scott Green, Professor of Religious Studies, Fain Family Endowed Chair in Judaic Studies, and John Paul Russo, Professor of Classics and English, Chair of the Department of Classics. The curriculum changes each semester with updated works relevant to current topics in society.

To graduate with Foote Fellows Honors Program distinction, Foote Fellow students must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 by the completion of the final semester. Eligibility for the Foote Fellows Honors Program transcript distinction for each student is determined by the lower of two GPAs:

  1. UM cumulative graduation GPA
  2. Combination GPA (UM cumulative graduation GPA + Transfer GPA)

The Foote Fellows Honors Program reflects the educational vision of former University of Miami President Edward T. Foote, who retired in 2000 after serving the University for twenty years.

All Incoming Foote Fellows must work with their Transitional Guides when selecting and registering for their initial set of courses at UM.
