SOAR: Students Optimizing & Activating Resources

The Empower Me First SOAR program is a transition support program for first-generation, first-year students. This high-impact-practice, enrichment program exposes students to a variety of student success and community building experiences. Students will develop and enhance necessary skills to successfully navigate their first year at the University of Miami such as time-management, identifying and utilizing support resources, career readiness and financial literacy.

Students will engage with university administrators, faculty, staff, advisors, alumni and community speakers in topics including celebrating their first-generation student identity, financial education, career education, intersectional identity and social justice, health and wellness, and leadership and involvement. The cohort-based program also provides students the opportunity to experience the city of Miami through an off-campus cultural trip.

The program is open to first-generation, first-time freshman and transfer students, to include residential and commuter students. The program occurs during the Fall semester only.
